![]() That's how a battle is actually won in Total War, gaining access to the enemy backline with your cavalry. To the side of your archers you have a few spearman, they can help out your frontline if that isn't doing so well but most importantly they protect your flanks and back from enemy cavalry. The base tactic in Total War is having a frontline of melee units that can hold the line (good morale and defence is important), behind that you have ranged units, there they are relative safe and can dish out damage. ![]() Well as soon as you run to armies that are bigger then yours that won't work any more. Lastly, the unit formations (turtle/wedge/circle) are for different situations, if the enemy is encamped or has range advantage, using a turtle formation would deflect missile attacks, whilst the wedge increases charge speed at the expense of armour, so flanking light infantry would be their target, and circle/square formations are used when you are outnumbered and expecting to be flanked or attacked from all angles. 'Defeat in detail' is where you move your strongest units to focus on one aspect of the enemy to overwhelm them, whilst the remainder 'holds', the formations button gives you access to these as quick draw lines. ![]() The position of your archers will usually be dictated by the type of range you/they have, as well as whether your own units are shielded. For example if the enemy cavalry is set up your right flank, you may wish to have your spearman there, and move your cavalry to the left to provide a flanking opportunity of your own. The types of formations are typically based on a few military tactics, they should be adopted depending on both the enemy unit types, but also the way they are set up.
